Tourism is an important element of the Dales economy. Research undertaken in 2019 by Global Tourism Solutions using the STEAM model shows that the volume and value of the visitor economy has increased significantly over the 10-year period to 2019:

From 2009 to 2019:

  • The economic impact of the visitor economy increased by 88% to £484m.
  • Employment (full time equivalent) in the sector increased by 40% to 8k.
  • Overnight staying visitors increased by 36%.
  • Self-catering accommodation (including cottages, campsites and hostels) doubled to nearly 1500 establishments.
