The Farming Life Centre, based at the Agricultual Business centre in Bakewell, is a charity dedicated to supporting the health, wellbeing, and resilience of farming and rural communities. The charity delivers a wide range of outreach projects aimed at tackling the often-hidden social, economic, and health inequalities faced by upland farmers and rural residents. Its initiatives span mental and physical health, business support, heritage, the arts, and skills development.
A Community Resilience Grant of £11,884 awarded by Derbyshire Dales District Council supported the charity in establishing its free Rural Befriending Project which matches individuals with volunteers for regular one-to-one visits. These visits involve a friendly chat over tea, attending local events, or short trips—helping individuals stay socially connected and engaged with their community..
The project not only supports mental wellbeing but also strengthens the social fabric of the Derbyshire Dales rural area. Volunteers receive training and ongoing support, and their travel expenses are covered, ensuring the service is accessible and sustainable.
Rachel Metcalfe (Manager) says:
We’re so grateful for the UKSPF funding from Derbyshire Dales District Council - it’s helped us get our befriending project off the ground and into people’s homes. For many in our rural communities, especially older members, a friendly face and a regular chat can make all the difference. It’s about helping people feel valued, connected, and part of something again.
